It sometimes feels very difficult to find community to talk about teaching. For Terese and myself, it was a lack of opportunities to talk to teachers from across LU about teaching for sustainability that led us to start the Transformation Thursdays (and now, by popular demand, even Transformation Tuesdays — see upcoming dates below!) — the lunch meetings where we meet up with each other and anyone else who would like to talk with us or about teaching for sustainability. It is informal, we enjoy having lunch together and anyway, so it was an easy format to get started, and now we are always happy to meet up and have great conversations with you all!
At physics, there is a network of young teachers that was started a while ago, also because they lacked community and took action. They approached it in a much more structured way than we did, but they equally feel that it is successful and meaningful. And from my former job in Norway, I know of at least two more, similar initiatives that create community, but do it in a different way from us. We discuss those four examples in the article “Creating grassroots communities of practice to discuss teaching” by Glessmer et al. (2026) that was published yesterday. We share the design criteria that are common across the four initiatives and what we feel are challenges and success factors. Check it out, it might be a useful resource for you to build your own community tailored to your interests and needs!
